2010 Enviro Summer Institute

I enjoyed the ground water presentation, interesting and informative; we don't often think of what we get from the tap. Great hands on experience; visual learners would benefit.
Tuesday - Reflections and Images
There is no progress if there is no challenge. Analyzing the water specimens was exciting. The strip testing was a good visual experience; lab quest was more challenging because of the calibration. It's nice to know what's in your water. How many people think of that. Always impressed with the intuition of research students and the level of resources at ND.

lab quest data seems more accurate than the test strips, perhaps because the technology was more difficult to set uo. Entering the data lends reiability to your findings. I liked the building tours and found the intuition and dedication of working students to be refreshing. Meeting with a problem solving group gave us an opportunity to relate our work to individual classroom needs. Colleagiality is great.

Symposium Presentation - Water samples were provided and collected from individual wells. Data for testing water samples was recorded by way of using test strips and a lab quest tool. The water was tested for the presence of nitrates, chloride, ph balance, and hardness. Numbers were then entered at two pages found at wellhead.michianastem.org: Data Collection and Individual Well Reports. Hard copy data lends validity to one's work. If it's not written down, it didn't happen.
Registering the well and completing data boxes was relatively simple and sequential in format. Hard evidence can then be provided at any time. Recorded data offers a point of reference, comparison, and valid findings. Students with a basic understanding of navigating a web site should be able to participate.
